Mary MacKillop
Australia is rejoicing with the Canonization of Blessed Mary MacKillop, now to be known as Saint Mary of the Cross, by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome on Sunday 17 October 2010 at 1945 hours, Australian Eastern Summer Time.
Mary, under the guidance and mentorship of Father Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph in Penola, South Australia in 1867, when she became Sister Mary of the Cross. She was renowned for her work among the poor and underprivileged in education, as well as great actions of compassion, kindness and charity, for her fight for social justice and for her total trust in God. The Sisters rapidly grew in number and in strength and have indeed made a huge contribution to society throughout Australia and in New Zealand since that time.
Mary’s life was far from easy and her story is one worthy of the interest of every person of faith and of those who have empathy for their fellow human beings.
Mary’s Feast Day is held each year on 8 August, the anniversary of her death.
Celebrations at St Joseph’s and St Francis Xavier’s were held at each Mass during that weekend with a special liturgy. Following the 11am Mass at St Joseph’s and the 8.30am Mass at St Francis Xavier’s pictures of Mary were processed through each church, where both eventually will be permanently installed.
A Special Mass to honour the newly Canonized Saint, was held in St Mary’s Cathedral, Hobart on Monday 18 October at 7.30pm.
