Removal of the Painting of the Ascension
The Mather Brown Painting of The Ascension, was removed and taken for restoration on Wednesday 11 June 2008. This painting was purchased in 1838 and was used in a rented room until the opening of St Joseph's Church in 1841, where it has been hanging ever since. It has suffered considerable damage from the ravages of time, oil smoke and water during the course of its history
.
It was removed without incident in a most professional manner, for which we are very grateful.
The image on the right shows the painting as it was hanging behind the alabaster altar.
The image on the left shows the painting as it is being lowered to the floor. Much of the damage can be seen in the lower left hand corner of this image.
We look forward to the return of the restored painting in approximately eighteen months time.
Please see Parish History page for further information.
